Welcome to the New Year, friends! This was the possibly the last Hogmanay celebration for Edinburgh and the gang and I were sure not to miss it. Well, we had free tickets. For those in the U.S., Hogmanay is Scots for the “last day of the year”–maybe you learned something new.
One particularly amusing part of the evening was watching my friend talk to Hogmanay staff for probably fifteen minutes about the fact that we paid five pounds to stand on the street with thousands of people. This was my first New Year’s Eve experience where I took the mass mob approach to celebrating the holiday. Those mecca party places like Vegas or New York just doesn’t seem appealing to me. Why do people pay money to have intoxicated people step on their feet or blow an air horn way too close for comfort?
Definitely good company helped with the celebration and the fact that we figured out that it was better hanging out near the deejay booth towards the entrance of the party. I was impressed that they got Peter Hook of New Order/ Joy Division fame to deejay. It was funny watching him raise his fist to “Love Will Tear Us Apart” and some “Blue Monday” remixes, but I suppose it’s fair to do when they’re his songs. Good show, Mr. Hook.
Luckily I wasn’t trampled by anyone and we were able to follow some friends back to their flat so we could eat the remainder of their NYE dinner. Well, 2008 is–like it or not–here.
This semester looks like it will be busy. I just noticed that I have Friday class at 9am. I’m not too happy about that obviously. I need to figure out some good resolutions. Perhaps “resolution” is not what I need exactly, but plans for moving forward. I remember having to make resolutions in elementary school and presenting them. Why is it that “resolution” or the betterment of the present such a priority when the future is inherently more complex? It’s time to march onwards, upwards, and twirling towards freedom!
I hope everyone had a nice New Year. None of my friends better be planning 08/08/08 weddings. Well, go ahead. I’m probably not going to be back home by then. Upwards and onwards.
