Concerning the general topic of the Master’s dissertation, I sit back in my chair, drum my fingers on my desk and ponder: “Motivation, Motivation, Where for art thou, Motivation?”
There are a range of activities that have filled up my days following my last essay hand-in–none of which having much to do with my dissertation topic. In my spare time I have gone to gigs, downloaded a lot of new indie music, hosted a few radio shows, entertained a few folks from back home, and on a more grander scale, I went to Germany.
I think it was my trip to Germany that really snuffed out the doldrums and has gotten me more in the mood to get to work. The only issue is that I really want to go back to Germany now. I wasn’t very “homesick” when I first came back from Germany after studying abroad years ago, but this most recent trip made me really miss the Vaterland. I spent the most time in Freiburg–the city where I used to live–but it was visiting new places and meeting new people that really seduced the wanderer in me. After returning to Edinburgh, I even went to the library and checked out a German grammar book to brush up on things that I have forgotten.
I think I miss the culture and people the most. If I could take that with me everywhere, I would be very happy. Well, it can’t be all fun and games at the moment. I must refocus the troops and get back to thinking about the dissertation–which is hilariously on Goethe. Three more months of books to go.

My Karl Marx mug is actually much cooler than the one pictured.
